"The Healers" is the sixteenth episode of the second season of ER. It first aired on NBC on February 22, 1996. It was written by John Wells and directed by Mimi Leder. It has Ray "Shep" Shepard, Carol Hathaway's lover, and his partner, Raul Melendez, going into a burning house to save some children, but results in tragedy. John Carter has difficulty treating third-degree burn cases.
Plot[]
Carol fears the worst for Shep and his partner, Raul, when they ran into a burning building to save children without proper equipment.
As the burn casualties come in, ER grieves for one of the burn cases. Carter questions himself when he faces difficulty over burn cases.
Doug stands up to his father when he fails to show up for a basketball game. Susan is dismayed when her sister Chloe returns.
NBC Description[]
EMERGENCY RESCUE: When a mother of four sets her apartment building ablaze by illegally preparing methamphetamines, Shep (Ron Eldard) and Raul (Carlos Gomez) rush in unprotected to save the children.
While Hathaway is relieved when Shep shows up at the ER unharmed, they are both devastated when Raul comes in with burns over 90 percent of his body.
Ross reaches out to his father (James Farentino), only to be disappointed yet again. Marg Helgenberger guest stars.
Short summary[]
Shep and Raul get a call about a burning house and are the first ones on the scene. When they find out there are three children inside, Shep goes in, ignoring the fact they don't have the proper equipment. At the ER victims of the fire keep coming in and when somebody says Shep and Raul where there first, everybody starts worrying about their fate, especially Carol. Meanwhile, Susan's sister Chloe has returned and Doug has made an appointment with his father to see a basketball game.

- Mimi Leder's last stint as director on the show. She left to go direct Mirovnik (1997).
- Mimi Leder had previously worked with actor Carlos Gómez (who plays ill-fated paramedic Raoul) on another TV series, China Beach (1988). Gomez's character suffered burns in that show too.
- This episode received Emmy nominations for Best Writing (John Wells), Directing (Mimi Leder) and Single Camera Editing (Randy Jon Morgan). None of them converted into a win.
