Happy New Year is the twelfth episode of the first season of the NBC medical drama series ER. It premiered on January 5, 1995.
Synopsis[]
Chloe plans to move to Texas with her boyfriend and have her baby. Carter struggles through his first surgery. Benton 's sister insists they place their mother in a nursing home.

NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLVE: After seemingly endless requests, Dr. Benton finally allows Dr. Carter to observe in the O.R.
After Dr. Lewis disagrees with Dr. Kayson (Sam Anderson) over the care of a patient, the patient's family sues for malpractice.
Meanwhile, Lewis's sister decides to move to Texas with her flaky boyfriend.
Dr. Benton and his sister (Khandi Alexander) discuss new arrangements for the care of his ailing mother.

- Dinah Lenney makes her first appearance as Nurse Shirley in this episode. She would go on to be a mainstay of the recurring supporting cast for fifteen seasons, until the series ended in 2009.
