Love Among the Ruins is the twenty-third episode of the first season of the NBC medical drama series ER. It premiered on May 4, 1995.
Synopsis[]
Mark and Jenn struggle to make their relationship work after he moves in with her in Milwaukee. Doug coaches Jake's Little League team. Chloe's irresponsibility wears Susan down. Carter decides to apply for both the ER sub-internship and the surgical sub-internship. Carol and Tag discuss their vows and other wedding details; he becomes upset when Carol invites Diane Leeds, knowing that she'll bring Doug. Benton exhibits a growing attraction to Jeanie . Susan discovers what happened to Div when she spies his picture in a cabbie's dating service photo book. The staff finds out that Carter comes from a wealthy family. Swift has to take over for Mark during a trauma.

WEDDING PLANS: As their wedding day rapidly approaches, Hathaway (Juliana Margulies) and Taglieri (Rick Rossovich) argue over the details and Carol puts off writing her vows. Greene moves to Milwaukee in an attempt to save his marriage, and his deteriorating performance in the ER hires Dr. Swift (Michael Ironside).
Benton agrees to recommend Carter for a surgical sub-internship, although he and other ER coworkers are surprised to learn of Carter's wealthy background.
Benton is also surprised by his growing attraction to Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Reuben).

- After finding out that Carter may have family money, Malik digs out a copy of Chicago Magazine, featuring the 50 richest people in Chicago. According to that magazine, Carter's father is named Roland, but in subsequent episodes he is named John 'Jack' Carter.
- This episode indicates that Carter's dad is the one with all the money, but later it's found that Carter's grandparents are the ones with all the money.
- There are many different sources the episode title could be alluding to: a Robert Browning poem from 1855, a 1904 Warwick Deeping novel, a 1948 Angela Thirkell novel, a 1953 novella by Evelyn Waugh, to name a few. But probably the one which could be associated most with this episode is the 1975 made-for-TV movie with the same title, starring Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier, about an aging actress who hires an ex-lover as her lawyer. He is still in love with her, although she doesn't know it.
